Billy is a great little rockabilly and psychobilly compilation. It comes from California’s Hep Cat label and showcases the who’s who of the genres. The album kicks off with the grand-daddy of all rockabilly bands, Reverend Horton Heat and a track called “Loco Gringo’s Like To Party from their recent Lucky 7 release. That sets the course for what’s to come. Next up is a favorite in the rockabilly circuits, Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys with a track called “Steady Baby. One of my favorite artists is here and that is Wayne Hancock. The first so called Psychobilly track comes up with the fast pace of the Nekromantix. All’s good except for the poor bass players fingers from slapping the stand up that fast. As for the rest of the artists, this is the first time I have heard them. It’s quality stuff and Hep Cat manages to reach into plenty of different styles in order to pull Billy together. This album is perfect for both the consumer who is unfamiliar with the genre as well as the seasoned vetran to which this would serve as proof that the genre is still very much alive and kicking.
