King of Woolworths is the messed up DJ project by DJ Jon Brooks from Manchester England. What is King of Woolworths? Well, it’s hard to even tell when you only two songs into the album. The first track “Kentish Town is quite an obnoxious affair while the second track, “Bakerloo (Main Titles) is a little more laid back. After listening further you realize that “Bakerloo is a little more like the rest of the album. King of Woolworths is downtempo but Brooks manages to keep the music a little left of center. There is lots of great music here albeit a bit darker than what one is usually used to. Brooks sometimes uses twisted vocal samples from recording that I hope no one else in this world is in possession of. I can’t help but feel that Ming Star must be the soundtrack for a movie that is running in Jon Brooks’ head. It is a bit of a mindfuck in places but in others you are taken away to another dimension entirely. Not a bad debut from the King of Woolworths.
