There is a lot to be said for staying on top of everything in the music scene. Something that I thought I was pretty good at. But it was my surprise when I found out that Peter Wolf has been putting albums out fairly regularily after his one hit wonder “Lights Out in 1984 (You remember “Lights out, uh huh, flash flash flash). Don’t forget about his years as front man of the J. Geils Band too. It was my impression that Sleepless was his return to the recording studio. Now that I am up to date on Peter’s past, let’s look at his present. He has moved as far away from the pop world as possible with Sleepless. It’s an awesome display of roots singing and songwriting. There are too many guests on this album to mention so I will just mention the obvious. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards help on a coupld of tracks. Peter is not afraid to try even the Tom Waits style of songwriting on tracks like “Homework“. Sleepless is not the same artist as once fronted the J. Geils Band. No, Peter Wolf has evolved into a masterful roots songwriter and an equivalent singer. Sleepless is highly recommended.
