With the success of Modest Mouse in the last couple years, main Mouse, Isaac Brock is left without a home for his crazy ideas and left of center songwriting. With that being said, I’d like to introduce Ugly Casanova, Isaac’s new music vehicle to allow the more experimental side of him out of the cage. The name, rumour has it, is that Ugly Casanova is the name used by a crazed Mouse fan who made headlines at a Denver show in 1998. Brock decided to try and use some of this fans writing to make some songs out of, after the man went missing. Brock is joined by Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Paul Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), John Orth and Brian Deck to make up this new Sub Pop signing. Modest Mouse fans will find much to revel in the sound of Casanova because it really isn’t that far removed from what Brock has always done, meandering vocals with the odd jab and mostly a bit out of key. Isaac’s rough vocals are the main attraction here but one can’t help over look Brian Deck;s production work. The mix is perfect, focusing on the vocals but allowing the instruments enough room to breath. All Modest Mouse fans should definitely investigate Ugly Casanova.
