Varnaline has more or less come full circle. They are right back to the sound that they started out with; a gritty and yet very gentle style of Americana rock. As you probably know, Varnaline pretty much consists of Anders Parker now who has plugged along with the band for many years. It's pretty noble for Anders to keep it going after the rest of the band has jumped ship. He must feel pretty good about himself though being on Steve Earle's label and all. It is always tough when your label goes under as Anders found with Varnaline's previous label Zero Hour. Songs in a Northern Key is a very heartfelt album that rocks in all the right places. There are songs that could be almost considered lullabies like "I Don't Want" and others that pick up and get the listener tapping their feet. Anders will please many longtime fans with Northern Key and he will be bound to gain a few more along the way.
