12 Rods - Separation Anxieties
12 Rods have quite a unique sound. They sound vaguely dated while invoking futuristic thoughts and visions. The band borrows strongly from producer Todd Rundgren's Utopia and other 80's pop and yet infuses a futuristic cacophonous sound complete with Ryan Olcott's over the top pop vocals. A couple listens were needed in order to fully realize the value of this album. It's pop and yet it's so much more. The later XTC resemblences aren't by accident either. As I was saying the band takes from the past in order to learn and move into the future. Some tracks are light and airy but still retain a very pop feel to it and others end up even more hard driving but never crossing the line. Take my advice and listen to this a couple times before you make up your mind on it. I almost dismissed this album.
