Some of you may recognize the nem Virgil Shaw as a member of Dieselhed and others may have never heard of him before. I, myself, am new to Virgil and it was one of those pleasant suprises. On Quad Cities Virgil takes on a bit of a folk persona in the Richard Buckner vein. His achingly simple vocals and sparse arrangements are meant to evoke a feeling of loneliness. He is in the Tom Waits area for instrumentation as well. He chooses crazy style instruments and as long as they make a sound they will fit the bill. Some tracks that totally stand out are "Carving Soap" (where Virgil's voice breaks on a few notes but it really works), and "Volvo". Hopefully we will hear more from Virgil Shaw as a solo artist.
