The Sadies have taken another switch on the new Stories Often Told album. They have decided to try out Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor for production rather than Steve Albini, who they have used for the past couple of albums. It must have been the relationship that they forged on their last album when Greg and Jim Cuddy joined the band on a couple of songs. Their sound doesn’t really change much in the process but it’s almost as if The Sadies are better understood by Keelor than Albini. Keelor knows where the guys are coming from with their country ballads and it just feels like a better fit. It’s a little more straightforward country music but there are still the rock influences underneath. The band still has a spaghetti western feel to some songs with their almost surf-like guitar riffs. And it’s strange to have a producer like Keelor give a production a bit of a rough and tumble feel but with the weary tales and echoey guitars that the Sadies have perfected over the years, it really works. Their songs are better left rough and let the music speak for itself.
