I should let you know that this reviewer only got into Tortoise with TNT. He also felt that it was an amazing album that exceeded all hype and expectation put on Tortoise with all the high praise. TNT is now considered substandard (pardon the pun) after listening to Standards with one listen. It must be hard being in a band as influential as Tortoise; all eyes are on your every move and the public is just waiting to pounce on it. It's seems that with Standards (and in some ways TNT) Tortoise has been moving away from it's namesake slow sound and injecting a little more structure into the equation. There are still some tracks such as "Firefly" that retain the ambient flow of earlier Tortoise but most involve a groovy jazz feel to them. Although Tortoise has added a little more structure on Standards, the band still stretches out and proves that there should never be any boundaries, especially with rock music. John McEntire and co will never be ones to follow Standards, that's what makes this seem like such misnomer.
