This Edmonton based band is really gaining momentum and popularity and it is rightly so with their creative and original music. Old Reliable has gone down and depressed on us with Gradual Moment and rightfully so. Lead singer and guitarist Mark Davis experienced heartache at its worst when his girlfriend died not to long ago. This can be a very depressing time in ones life but, unfortunately, it leads to plenty of songwriting inspiration and feelings are revealed that you most likely had never felt before. You can feel the emotion in Mark’s vocals and the thought that has gone into the lyrics. Somehow Old Reliable managed to get Joey Burns (Giant Sand, Calexico), John Convertino (Giant Sand, Calexico), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Bob Egan into the studio to help them out on a few songs. The result is an album that rivals Giant Sand as well as Lambchop. Old Reliable lives up to its name here and provides yet another self-released album that defies categorization and belongs on a reputable indie label. It is also an album that fits into the ever changing genre of No Depression. And the band has created yet another very classy package.
