Most people would probably ask "What's so Country about the Old 97's?" and my answer would be the heart and soul of these boys. They started out as roots rockers and they have, like most No Depressions bands, slid into a more pop mode. It seems like an obvious direction for them too. With this, their first for Elektra, they still sing of heartache and heartbreak and they do it so well. The track "Jagged" and the closer "Valentine" pretty much sum up the feelings this stellar group is feeling on "Fight Songs". The album title evokes an image of upbeat drinking songs but depressions still looms. Think of it as emotional fighting and there you have Old 97's.
