Those of you who aren't from Calgary, Alberta probably haven't heard of Lorrie Matheson. He has been plugging along with his musical projects; ones that have been put on the shelf (Fire Engine Red) and the one that's his current project, National Dust. Those people that have come in contact with Lorrie's music realize, instantly, how his music touches people and how his songwriting is underrated. With Welcome To Utopia, National Dust improve on their debut, ...blind luck ain't no luck, both songwriting and production. It also achieves a little more of the "Americana" feel to it with the addition of the odd pedal steel. The album opens with the jangly "Tragedy Ann", a fabulous tale about a bad luck girl. Then they take a trip to "California" that opens with harmonica blowing sweetly in your ear. The band proves it still likes to rock on the title track. On "Sorrow Floats" there is some backup vocals that sound like Juliana Hatfield backing up the Lemonheads. I could go on forever about this album but you must go and find out the marvel of National Dust for yourself. Contact the Dust to get your very own personal copy (dustmail@nationaldust.net) or order through Miles of Music.
