This Beautiful Mess are a new band to sign to Deep Elm and come all the way from Vlissingen, Holland. This is a band that takes many cues from the shores of England in the form of Radiohead, Elbow, Coldplay, etc and reaches far beyond what you would expect from this cinematic rock style. Vocalist Arjen Van Wijk is able to use his powerful and yet fragile voice to bring out every emotion in each song with style. The band is rounded out by very apt players including Axel (drums), Joop (guitar), Abne (bass) and Lydia (some vocals, keyboards, string machine??). The album imagery is dark and weighs heavy on your soul but somehow allows through enough light to keep the listener hopeful for a happy outcome. Falling On Deaf Ears could be named more appropriately with it’s achingly beautiful vocals and cinematic arrangements. This Beautiful Mess should appeal to more than Deep Elm’s emo audience. They should reach out into England’s mainstream rock fans that enjoy the afformentioned bands. This is a magnificent debut from This Beautiful Mess.
