If you or I approached the executives at Epic Records and told them we had this completely vulgar album idea with songs such as "Fuck Her Gently" we would be abruptly escorted out of the office and ejected to the streets with absolutely no chance of a record deal. Jack Black and his friend Kyle Gass have used Jack's celebrity nature to get the above record into the Epic catalog. Yes, there is a song on here called "Fuck Her Gently" and it is a lesson on how to fuck your woman. Spumco, the makers of such cartoons as Ren & Stimpy and George Liquor, American, have also done a Flash video for the controversial song. Imagine John Popper (Blues Traveller) singing for Barenaked Ladies performing songs written by Denis Leary. This is the image that keeps floating in my head. The songs are actually well written (beyond the gratuitous use of "Fuck" in all its glorious beauty) and Jack actually has a good voice (hence the comparison to John Popper) but in the end, Tenacious D just ends up being a novelty album that rocks pretty hard. I tried as hard as I could not to like it but somehow Jack and Kyle's geeky innocence reeled me in.

The fuckin' D, man...the fuckin' D! Jack and Kyle have really gone far from this debut album. Worldwide popularity, a movie (with a kickass soundtrack), and most of all respect as a band. It's hard not to respect them, really. You're gonna hear shit like "Karate Schniztel" and "Cock Pushups" and think "What the fuck?", but their humor is only one part of what the D is made up of. At their heart, they're a couple of hard-rock geeks with acoustic guitars. Sounds like a novelty, but not when you factor in talent; The D has plenty. They got Dave Grohl in on this album, and his drumming adds plenty of fury at times. Kyle Gass, more so than Jack, can really handle a guitar well and if I'm not mistaken, he's had some classical training. Songs like "Wonderboy", "Tribute" and "Rock Your Socks" certainly attest to that. The D have taken a simple concept (make rock that makes you laugh), run with it, and have shown it to be good. Quite good. Doesn't matter if you "get it" or not, this is just a good listen, front to back, whether you want to laugh or rock out or embarrass yourself in mixed company.

are you kidding? this album is awesome. so, fuck her gently got some flack, big deal. tribute is a song that i just have to crank up whenever its being played. whether its in the morning or the middle of the night....i just got to hear as loud as i can without any distortion from a crappy sound system. there are many great songs on this album that aren't "novelty" like, wonder boy and dio and tribute. i have seen this "video" of fuck her gently on youtube and found it quite amusing. i hope many other agree it isn't "just a novelty album that rocks pretty hard"
