Canada has always rocked. That’s a given. But when I first listed to Tangiers I was blown away at how impressive this album is. Don’t get me wrong, this stuff has all been done before but when a band pulls off the retro rock thing properly, it sounds brand new. (Brand New, It’s Retro, Brand New, It’s Retro) This foursome from Toronto, ON is about to take off with one hell of a debut album. Hot New Spirits may remind some of the Strokes but put a little more gritty White Stripes in the mix and … oh fuck, I don’t know. Tangiers, to me, is more impressive than most of the garage rock revivalists out there. I’m completely serious. There is more charisma here than the Strokes could ever have. The guys all got together when their former bands, The Deadly Snakes (new album coming out soon) and The Killer Elite, went through line-up changes. Two became one and Tangiers was born. Their sound has too much integrity to be considered punk but the vocals are presented in a crazed maniacal fashion at times. There are even decent harmonies in songs like “Eyes Shut. If you are into any of the garage rock stuff, you have to check out Tangiers. If you are fed up with the garage rock revival, you still have to check out Tangiers. This album deserves recognition.
