Friends Are Ghosts is the debut from Taking Pictures who are 3/4 of the legendary Pittsburgh band Hurl. The guys have relocated to Chicago, home of many influential indie bands. My Pal God is lucky to be releasing this fine display of indie rock at it’s best. The music is well written and the complexities are so subtle that pretty much any aspiring fan can get into Taking Pictures immediately. Some math-rock artists manage to create such a complex song structure that it’s hard for anyone without a musical background to get into. That’s where Taking Pictures comes in. There are time signature changes and other switch-ups involved in Friends Are Ghosts but it remains within confines so people don’t get lost. There are not many bands putting out this style any more which should give these boys full reign over it. Mat Daly’s vocals are very well suited for Taking Pictures and everyone else backs him up nicely. Take time out for Taking Pictures. It’s a disc worth seeking out.
