Every artist has it, that one album that the rest of your catalog always (unfortunately) get compared to. Girlfriend is the said album for Matthew Sweet. Most critics say that Sweet has never come close to the perfection he acheived on Girlfriend. This critic would have to disagree. Matthew's 1999 effort, In Reverse, far outshines this masterpiece. Never the less one cannot deny the influence that Girlfriend has had on pop rock music. Sure Matthew borrows and steals from the likes of Big Star, Beatles, REM, (the list could go on forever) but he is able to make the resulting sounds all his. You would be hardpressed to find a track on here that doesn't have his characteristics on it. He uses enough distortion that it sounds grungy and yet his "sweet" voice keeps it all accessible. His semi-hit "Evangeline" sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. Matthew's longtime friend Lloyd Cole can be found on a couple tracks as well as Velvet Crush's Ric Menck. Rediscover Matthew Sweet for the first time with fresh ears.
