The Stratford 4 are a relatively new band that have placed their roots in San Francisco even though most of them are from Seattle. Chris Streng (vocals and guitar) watched a couple of his former band-mates go on to form the relatively successful Black Rebel Motorcycle Club while he was left to rethink and create his ultimate band. The sound that they end up with is a bit dyslexic. I think this actually works though because there is very diverse style that they cover. On one song they are all gentle and sweet, like Yo La Tengo and other quiet type indie bands. But Stratford 4 can rock out with a more aggressive attitude as well. Check out “Hydroplane for an example of Guided By Voices styled songwriting and arrangement. Stratford 4 is full of talent and they don’t end up getting stuck in one style. They aren’t afraid to try different things and incorporate all sorts of influences. Chris’ voice has a similarity to that of Lou Reed, which can work for almost any singer.
