After the praise of Christy McWilson's debut album, The Lucky One, she was watched closely for her follow-up. Choosing producer and label-mate Dave Alvin to handle the knob twiddling again was the right choice because as a long time fan, Dave knows exactly what works for Christy. Over the 12 tracks on Bed Of Roses we find many of the same musicians like R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Rick Shea and Chris Gaffney among others. While there really isn't anything that new on Bed Of Roses, McWilson proves herself as a fantastic songwriting with tracks like the beautiful "The Serpentine River" and album opener "Life's Little Enormities". While Christy may not see fame and fortune herself, she may see some success in more prominent artists covering her well crafted songs. Out of the 12 tracks here she only uses other artists material on 2 tracks: Moby Grape's "805" (which she performs as a duet with Alvin) and "Darkness, Darkness" by the Youngbloods. Christy McWilson does have a fine voice and fans of female country artists and Dave Alvin will definitely find much to enjoy on Bed Of Roses.
