This new band on the upstart label DoublePlusGood packs a hefty punch. The Spiveys come to us from Chicago, home of many acclaimed indie rock bands. They consist of two guitar players who also sing and a drummer. That's it! And miraculously it works for the band. They have a crunchy edgy sound similar to that of Steve Albini's Shellac or labelmates H. Chinaski. Lyrics are spit out with authority while guitars wail in the back ground. Sometimes the band slows down a bit into a sludgy mess of things but for the most part mercy is not something the band comes by easily. The production is muddy and not super crisp but before that turns you off, it works for the Spiveys. A welcome addition to the diverse array of bands in the Chicago area.
