Ray Mason has been at the music thing ever since 1982. Yup, it’s a long time to be doing it all yourself and now he has gone one step further by creating his very own label. All this for a guy that has just turned fifty. He has been seen for the likes of The Band, Marshall Crenshaw, Yo La Tengo, Joan Osborne, Freedy Johnston, Joan Jett, Blue Mountain… and the list literally keeps going and going. He has also played on Cheri Knight’s debut album as well as the Lonesome Brothers. When the Clown’s Work is Over is a great collection of original tracks that Ray Mason has crafted. Ray is able to incorporate pure pop ala Paul Westerberg into folky styles not unlike John Hiatt or Marshall Crenshaw. Some tracks lack a little energy but Ray makes up for it on other tracks. It’s almost as if he needs to choose a path, either pop or folk, but that would take away from what the Ray Mason band is all about, soulful fun music. It really is a fun ride and even though he may be reeling in the years he can still write a great song.
