The most recent project from one of Europe's hardest working men in metal (Rogga Johansson), Megascavenger debuted their first full-length Descent Of Yuggoth earlier this year. A follow-up to a solid demo released almost exactly a year prior, Descent of Yuggoth is a biting dose of grimy death metal, typical of many Swedish-born peers of the genre. Underlying currents of grindcore, mostly in the percussion and duality of sharp tempo shifts and thick production values, add a welcome variety to the music.
The intense 1-2-3 punch of "Nihilisticon", "Descent of Yuggoth" and "Smokescreen Armageddon" represent the album at it's absolute best. A dense mix of well written riffs, relentless percussion and guttural, disease-choked vocals create a vivid soundscape of death and decay. Lyrically, Rogga treads well-beaten paths that fit perfectly but never really surprise. Overall, Descent of Yuggoth is very easily predetermined in both it's style and substance, reflecting much of what Rogga has done in the past. This is neither a terrible thing, or a game-changer. Just a well-rounded collection of mostly excellent grinding death metal, ripe with the pungent reek of rotting flesh and scorched earth.
Also included is the original "Songs of Flesh (Part 1) demo in it's entirety, which suffers from not equaling the production values of the rest of the record but fits in quite well otherwise. With only a few so-so tracks, Descent of Yuggoth should be considered a successful venture for Rogga and his collaborating musicians (a list that includes the legendary Dan Swano amongst others). Megascavenger is a promising project that could, with a few tweaks, offer something truly monumental in the future.
