Cinema Novo is a power duo. It's kind of like the White Stripes only sans vocals. Guitarist Christopher Richardson and drummer Shawn Moeckly deal only in instrumentals. There are five of them on this self titled debut EP.
There are two knockout tracks here. The best of which is "Pandemic". Richardson's guitar playing has plenty of great riffs. And he can vary things up a bit there is a slow section. And it builds back up with plenty of power house drumming.
Not far behind in the catchiness department is "Copper Wires". There's a great out of nowhere guitar break, which recalls the Kinks in the mid 60s. This band plays in the spirit of mid 60s hard rock better than Van Halen, when it covered the Kinks on its debut.
They have a knack for longer cuts. The longest is "Revolt" at 5:47. It leads off, and it didn't thrill me until the third listen. Maybe it does go on a little too long, but they're definitely on to something.
"Poppies and Petroleum" takes a while to find the right groove, but about half way through it really rocks. And you realize it was worth the wait. This song also gets better on repeated listens.
Ironically, the longest title "Broken Windows Folded Into Cranes of Painted Glass" is the shortest cut here at 2:56.It works well enough, demonstrating, they can give you the abridged version if they have to.
