After Richie Hawtin’s critically acclaimed Decks, EFX, & 909 one would have thought that he would have laid low for a little let alone jump right back on board with a killer follow-up, DE9. On Closer To The Edit, Richie has taken a new technology and shown that it doesn’t matter what the electronica genius does it comes out sounding magnificent. The technology in question is called Final Scratch and it allows you to perform turntable like effects on pretty much any digital music no matter what form. He breezes through a whopping 31 tracks in the duration of the album and most of the artists will be left to figure out what Richie borrowed from their music. A cymbal here and a bass line there is all that Hawtin touches. The album really holds itself together as a minimalistic DJ mix that works good as travel music. I found that DE9 worked great as walking music to get you going a bit faster than usual. The music fits together seamlessly but Richie uses a start stop technique that allows the listener to breath a bit. DE9 is fully enjoyable and I would have to say a stronger overall album compared to Deck, EFX and 909. Let’s just see what Richie has up his sleeve for his next album.
