Along with Wilco, two bands who came from the alt.country arena, have moved into the pop territory. Marah even moreso than Wilco with their starry and sprawling epics hailing back to hairspray rock. I don’t think even hardcore fans were quite ready for this huge change of pace. You might have guessed it when it was announced that Owen Morris was behind the production ot Float Away. He was the producer that worked with Oasis and the Verve. It might actually be fitting to compare this album to some Brit Pop bands like Ash but there is even some familiarities to past bands like Faster Pussycat (especially the way Dave enunciates Smile-–"Smyal�). Yup, it’s Dave Bielanko’s gruff voice that does it in this super produced mix. Is it good? I can see old Marah fans put this right back on the shelf but people who have come to expect an ever growing sound from Marah will be very pleased. One of the things that ends up getting lost here is the Bruce Springsteen cameo that happens on the sprawling “Float Away�. Marah has done an album for the summer that could easily be thrown on the booming stereo as you drive by the beach. Float Away With The Friday Night Gods is an album that begs to be sung along with.
