Jim Lauderdale is an artist that loves to stick by the book. That doesn’t mean any book in particular. Jim is capable of doing rock, folk, country, and blues and lord knows what else but when his is dabbling in any of these genres he is right in with both feet. Some claim that Jim fits into the Americana genre but one listen to The Other Sessions you may be doubting that. These tracks are full-on old-school country and there’s no denying that. It has been a very long time since someone has filled an album of original country material that comes this close to that of Merle Haggard or George Jones. Lauderdale has a super strong voice that sometimes is completely overpowering (see “Honky Tonk Haze for an example. I would expect that Jim Lauderdale’s material from The Other Sessions will be covered by many a country musician, and become another Rodney Crowell who makes his money from other people doing his songs. It’s a way to make a living. Just buy The Other Sessions and sit back with a Jack Daniels and enjoy.
