Talk about a long wait. You think Boston waited a long time to put out its third album. Bill Fay waited 40 years to put out his third album. Unlike Boston this was worth the wait even if Fay's offering was much less anticipated by the masses.
The 69-year old artist draws you in with his melodies. There's a variety of styles. He can go to blues. The tempo can speed up, when it has to. His vocals are dripping with passion fueled by an honest love of life.
The positive nature of his lyrics are appealing. Though not all of them work. As heartwarming as "Be at Peace With Yourself" is, urging one to "not cry over spilled milk" is a bit trite.
Fay does show courage putting his spirituality into songs, even mentioning "Jesus," a word so infrequently uttered in pop culture. He doesn't get away from being an entertainer. The spirituality isn't overdone.
"Empires" is the most successful track on the album. The music on this song recalls Pink Floyd on its Wish You Were Here album, but with a less eccentric and pessimistic view point.
Fay deserves a larger audience. Though with his life experiences bursting out of his music, he doesn't seem like he's losing any sleep over it. He'd rather just say "Thank You Lord."
