Donald Fagen was the lead singer for the legendary rock band Steely Dan. He's continued on over the decades with various projects including solo albums, with Sunken Condos being the fourth.
Fagen has a knack for writing catchy melodies, and he throws in intriguing lyrics. There's a funny line about CPR in "Planet D'Rhonda."
Fagen's humor is also evident on the one cover of the album, Isaac Hayes' "Out of the Ghetto.'"
The songs are long, nothing is less than 4:14, the length of "Memorabilia," a reflection on the past (a favorite Fagen topic).
Fagen is not losing his youthful adventure after more than 40 years in the recording biz. He sings about partying and not going for the girl mother prefers.
What's most important is his music still has hooks complete with catchy guitar work and Fagen's elegant piano and organ playing.
