This is an album, which didn't draw me in right away. I found myself being won over with the 6:57 "Lonely Avenue." Then all the sudden this album of 20s and 30s jazz became a delight.
Diana Krall's voice is beautiful, and she creates a mood, which can even be a little strange and foreboding on "When the Curtain Comes Down."
It's not about reveling in misery. Krall shows triumphant independence with "There Ain't No Man Worth The Salt of My Tears."
The music is good. Guitar, ukulele, keyboard, it's enough to conjure up visions of old westerns with Walter Brennan.
There's scat singing on "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye" in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
While this music fits into the jazz category, it has something for fans of Randy Newman and the Rolling Stones in their quieter, bluesy moments ("Love in Vain" and "You Gotta Move").
It's a plus to have wonderful melodies like you hear on "Let It Rain." Maybe she should keep revisiting her father's record collection.
