Today's country is not the stuff I was raised on. Hank Wiliams, Lefty Frizell, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, the list goes on. The best thing about my job in a nursing home is walking down the hall and hearing these old bands playin the tunes that make the old folks clap. Everyone, like it or not, knows the lines to Hank Williams Jambalaya. Some would consider that a sentence. I've tried to keep an open mind as I walk into the gym. I recognize I'm not a young dude anymore. So I've tried to pay more attention to the "Todays Country" they play. Most of it (Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum) is junk. I have no issues calling overproduced music that way.
So the other day I was driving and I heard this song "Beer with Jesus" by Thomas Rhett.
I went onto spotify, because I rarely buy one album based on one song and listened to this guy. Beer for Jesus takes the cake. It premiers on CMT sometime this week and I think this guy will go far with that song. I can see that song being played in a nursing home someday.
The rest of the album is ok. You can tell he's crossing over and what his influences are. Haggard, Hank, and Zeppelin. But theres too much of that modern day country bee bop stuff for me. I like country music, and now that I've listened to this guys album I'll probably add the Beer with Jesus song to a playlist due to it's reflective nature and it's slow tempoe'd old school country feel. Check it out if you're into country. Give it a listen, you might find something you like.
