I have to get this off my chest: The Soft Set are begging to be compared to Belle and Sebastian. They even sing about the band in one of their songs. Differences between the two: The Soft Set are from Austin, Texas, The SS aren’t quite as gloomy, and The SS aren’t near as sappy as Belle and Sebastian. With that out of the way it will make this review much easier. This was another album I almost let slip by with one casual listen. Upon closer investigation I uncovered the charm and talent that The Soft Set has. They really know how to craft a fine mellow song and present without sounding sappy (like Belle and Sebastian). I can’t help but think of a mellow Jesus and Mary Chain when I hear songs like “Delivered Too Late� or a little bit of Cowboy Junkies. The main influence that they state in their bio is Velvet Underground and you can hear it prominently although The Soft Set is way more pop oriented. The Soft Set is an album worth seeking out.
