Its a safe bet that Hawkwind fans will like this album. Surely the main musical influence on this set is Hawkwind. In addition, there are a couple former Hawkwind members guesting on the disc, Alan Davey and Nik Turner. Additional guests include Massimo Arke, Fabio Bartolini, Sparky Simmons, John Pack, Cyndee Lee Rule, Allen Welty-Green, Bjorn Jeppesen and A.G. Bergstein. The main lineup of the group is two people, Alisa Coral and Martyr Lucifer.
In addition to Hawkwind fans, those who enjoy the stories of H.P. Lovecraft will find plenty to like here because the lyrical content is all based on his work. Musically, though, this does stretch well beyond the type of space rock practiced by Hawkwind. There are moments that seem related to the Rock In Opposition (or RIO) movement of progressive rock. At times it seems to move close to heavy metal and at other points it can even feel a bit like Kraftwerk.
Even with such a wide array of musical influences, though, this is an album that feels consistent. It is sure to please space rock fans, but others who enjoy dark music (I could even see fans of Tool latching onto this pretty easily) will find plenty to enjoy here. This is the first of a trilogy coming from Space Mirrors. I, for one, am looking forward to see what else will be coming out from this group. They have definitely hooked me and piqued my interest here. Of course, they had me at Hawkind (or at H.P. Lovecraft both of them work equally for me).
