Sweet and sassy songwriter has never really been my type of flavor. So when U.K.'s Kathy Muir came across my desk, I was hesitant. From the surface, most track titles on Far From Entirely follow along the lines of your stereotypical female singer/songwriter trying to declare her independence lyrically. Never judge a book by it's cover...
Tracks like "Sweet and Easy" hold a promise for Muir. Fusing jazz and pop melodies with a country confidence, this song has vocal twists and turns charged with a lyrical brevity. As on most of the album, production allowed Muir's voice to be layered and this is when her sound is at it's most astounding.
The lead track "Jezebel" will trigger the Alannah Myles in you, very upbeat and sensual with a groove rock feel. And while Muir can certainly offer a softer side of her musical ability, she shines best when undertaking a folk feel, such as "Fairytale Lies". Most diverse is the last two of three songs, where Muir really shows off her piano work on "You Surround Me" and "The Piano Plays a Melody". The final track "Dream of the Night" ends things on a high note.
Though I still don't find myself to be a consumer of the genre, I felt the passion of this recording through Muir's voice. Certainly worth a listen to those in need of contemporary singer/songwriter with a twist of Country/Jazz/Folk.
