Somehow, in the Smoking Popes history, they have been categorized as punk/pop music. More pop than punk, it was lead vocalist Josh Caterer that made this band special. He had a crooner style voice that was very unique in the rock world. He had a charm that would impress the ladies and charisma that sold the gents. It didn't take long for word to get out about this Chicago based band comprised of three brothers. Capitol scooped them up and released two of their albums. The band eventually would fade into nothingness citing artistic differences as the issue. The Party's Over was actually recorded in 1998 but never saw the light of day. Double Zero, Mike Felumlee's (former Pope himself) new Chicago based label has taken on releasing this swan song of the Smoking Popes. It is an album of covers that include songs from Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson among others proving that the Popes were indeed more than just punk music. Maybe not the perfect place to discover the Popes but if you remember them, had a blast at their live shows, and wondered why they broke up you might be one that needs to seek out The Party's Over. The music is amazing and Josh's voice never lost it at all. In fact he sounds at home singing these covers. Also look for a Smoking Popes tribute album out around the same time.
