The duo of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have carved out quite the niche for themselves scoring soundtracks. The head Bad Seed and his accomplice Dirty Three multi-instrumentalist have a knack for creating atmospheres for gruesome wild west period films.
Cave takes on singing duties himself only a handful of times. On the terrifying "Burnin' Hell", he's at his sadistic best.
Mark Lanegan's deep growl features prominently on several tracks, including "Fire & Brimstone", an American Gothic hillbilly rag. You can hear the evil as he sings "Sure 'Nuff Yes I Do". He's hardly recognizable on the cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat" though.
Country veteran Emmylou Harris combination of beautiful and haunting is perfect for a flick like this. She contributes vocals to "Fire In The Blood", the standout "Cosmonaut", and "So You'll Aim Towards the Sky".
"Sure 'Nuff Yes I Do" is an olde timey sounding bluegrass number from Ralph Stanley. In fact, Stanley's version of "Fire & Brimstone", "Fire In the Blood", and an inspired and unexpected "White Light/White Heat".
In the end the Lawless soundtrack leaves me torn about seeing the movie. On one hand I love Cave's music and his writing. On the other hand there's Shia LaBeouf.
