This is a no-holds-barred country album at its finest and who better to deliver this music straight from their living room than the one and only Merle Haggard. Yes, Merle has recorded Roots Volume 1 in the comfort of his own living room. This is how a country legend decides to follow-up his great Anti Debut? Hold on a second here. What we have on Roots is a country legend cover country legendary music. As well, there is another country icon here: Norm Stephens who was Lefty Frizzell’s guitar player. And how about these songs: Lefty’s “Always Late (With Your Kisses), “If you got the money (I’ve got the time), “I want to be with you always, a great rendition of Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonkin’, Hank Thompson’s “I’ll sign my heart away and of course what would great country classics be without a little Merle Haggard. But Merle chooses to write some brand spanking new classics: “More than my old guitar, “Runaway Mama, and “I’ve got a tender heart are all written specifically for this occasion. And wouldn’t you know that they fit into the other classics seamlessly. Merle Haggard is a living icon and continues to prove it with instant classic albums such as this.
