What started out as a fun side project for a few of the American roots finest, has now become a underground fave. Weird tales is the second full-length adventurous outing for this midwestern supergroup. Consisting of the Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Marc Perlman, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy, Run Westy Run's Kraig Johnson and Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, they collectively prove that the alt-country field can be quite broad. Weird Tales' moves between sweet country-rock, dirty boogie, folk and straight ahead rock rave-ups. It's nice to have the distinct voices alternating between songs giving it the variety that it does. Don't mistake this for a quick side project for the group because it may rival its individual members' best work.
