Now that Howe Gelb has gotten over the loss of his collaborator, Rainer Ptacek, with the release of his very personal Hisser, Giant Sand is back on track. Taking their time with this one they travelled to New York, Memphis and Tucson and recorded with various producers creating a nice variety of feeling on Chore. Howe really is a genuis when it comes to songwriting and Chore just might be his finest moment with the array of styles that are shown. For the most part Giant Sands seems as though it is a Gelb solo project until you listen to it a few times. You then realize that most of this couldn't be done without Covertino and Burns helping out. I will make a bold statement here and say that Chore is my favorite Giant Sand album. On a side note, if you ever get a chance to see them live, by themselves or backing someone up, go see them.
