David Singer has crafted a very cool and smart singer / songwriter album with The Cost Of Living. This is his first solo album but he has previously recorded with a band known as Kid Million. Some people don’t belong in a band setting and that is most certainly the case with this David Singer album. The album opens up with “The Accident, a bit of Ben Folds Five thrown into outer space with samplers and such. The piano line that David plays on here is very hypnotic and adds to the space bleeps that swirl around courtesy of David’s sampler. The next track is the title track and in my opinion the best track on the album. The swaggering rhythm is very neat and again, the piano is very interesting as is the instrumentation. The deeper you get on The Cost Of Living the more sides of David you see. He proves himself a worthy contender for the indie singer / songwriter award and the album is one you should most definitely seek out if you enjoy introspective songwriting with super smart pop hooks. David Singer is a songwriter who is not afraid to take some chances on some weirder arrangements and it works to his advantage.
