Sue Garner has been quietly putting out release after release and just getting underground recognition. Well, Shadyside isn’t going to rocket her to stardom. It’s a soft spoken affair that noted producer JD Foster (Marc Ribot, Richard Buckner, Dwight Yoakam) but very diverse all the same. Most of the album maintains a rootsy feel but there is the odd pop track thrown in for good measure. We even get a cajun style track on “Old Women. Garner took a bit of different approach to recording Shadyside. She actually laid down the vocal tracks and most of the instruments and then asked some of her favorite musicians to add to the project. Each musician played whatever they felt with a minimal amount of direction adding to the creativity of the project. Some of the additional artists are Doug Wieselman, Rick Brown, Ted Reichman, James McNew from Yo La Tengo fame and Marc Ribot lends his guitar playing to a few tracks. The songs are phenomonal and Sue’s voice has never really sounded this perfect. Shadyside should be considered a triumph for Sue Garner.
