Rogga Johansson (Bone Gnawer, Ribspreader)'s latest project is Megascavenger, a grinding, chugging, grunting mess that hits peak stride from the opening notes and doesn't falter. Ok, there are only two songs on this EP, but "Songs of Flesh, Part 1" is a meaty keeper nonetheless. With muddy but stabbing riffs galore, this is quick, ten minute or so rave up that more often than not hits the bloody bullseye.
"Death Obsessed" is almost comical in its heaviness, featuring a steady but crazed riff. Jorgen Sandstrom (Grave Krux) guests on vocals on both songs, so it is hard to tell who is doing the muddy, phlegmy but credible growing. "No Heaven For The Sane" is a bit slower and more deliberate, but it features a slicing echoing solo that propels the energy forward. If this is what passes for calm in Johansson's world, the future could be tastily ugly.
This is surely a teaser for a full-length release, and as such ought to do the trick. Especially on "Death Obsessed," "Songs of Flesh, Part 1" is a pummeling slab, meaning that Johansson might want to keep his Megascavenger hat on for awhile. Megascavenger is one serious outlet for heavy black metal that is for the most part, stripped down to a deadly fighting weight.
