Nobody - Soulmates
Not entirely a hip hop album but I felt that this album best fit into this category. Elvin Estela (aka Nobody) had originally had an idea to create an instrumental beat tape to sell to keen djs. Before long Ubiquity caught wind of his little project and started hooking him up with some amazing artists like Cut Chemist, Aceylone and Freestyle Fellowship. There is a term that the label uses to describe his style and that is "shoegazer hip hop". It's very jazzy at times and yet at others totally atmospheric. The few tracks that actually contain rapping are outstanding too. He reminds me a lot of DJ Shadow the way the music creeps along at it's minimalistic pace and with enough going on to keep the listener interested. A good late night listen when the lights are low and everyone is laid back relaxing.
