This is one of those collectives that everyone and their dog has heard their work but no one would know. The Neptunes have produced all those annoying N Sync and Britney Spears songs that you hear in the malls. A group has to fund themselves somehow. They also helped launch the career of the talented Kelis (featured here on "Truth or Dare"). Now they are about to release exactly what they want. NERD (No One Ever Really Dies) is a bit of a bastard child of hip-hop. One of those albums that incorporates so many different styles that it's hard to class. That's a good thing and having the producing team of the Neptunes actually doing what they want then you know the result is going to be damn hot. That's what you get on In Search Of. The first track I heard was on the CMJ sampler disc and it was "Rock Star". It was not at all what I had expected but I was pleasantly surprised. The album really mixes up soul, pop, metal, hip-hop and turns it into a palatable affair. For an example of the soul sound, try out "Run To The Sun". For a sample of the hard rock taste, try "Rock Star". There is something for everyone here and NERD actually hit more than they miss.
