The Majesticons is part of a two-part plan conceived by Bronx-based Mike Ladd. There is a battle going on in the hip-hop world and it is the battle of commercialism vs. independent attitudes, or as they say in the liner notes: Pretty vs. Ugly. The Majesticons represent the commercial side of things while the Infescticons represent the DIY attitude of hip-hop. It is a fairly big collective that impressive in it’s size and Mike Ladd’s organizational skills. Just how does one person decide who performs on a track? But how does the music fare? The tracks on Beauty Party are full of humor and intelligence. Beneath the act, they actually have things to say. There are strong lessons in the Majesticons and the Infesticons. The rapping is great. How could you not have good vocalists when you have that many to choose from? You have an assortment of male and female rappers giving Beauty Party diversity. The sampling is cutting edge, reminding me of a lot of Dan The Automator’s style. It’s kind ironic having a “commercial concept album on one of the hottest underground hip-hop labels but it doesn’t matter. It just works. Majesticon rule number one: Learn the following mantra: Accumulate, Preserve, Transfer. Transfer this great concept album to your record collection.
