When I first heard Kristina Rocco's voice in 2009, it was on a pop/R&B remake of "You Don't Own Me," the hit song made famous by Leslie Gore. I knew she had power and commanded respect in her range, but I didn't know how sweet and distinct her singing was- then I listened to "The Way Home."
Prior to the latest album release by The Roccos, I hadn't realized Kristina and Michael Rocco were collaborating under their sur name. Whereas I was impressed by the more poppy style of old, the beautifully textured landscape of their latest project is nothing short of sensational to me. They insist on pulling the listener's heart strings right out of the gate with the ballad "Outcast." Continuing the conceptual theme of the album with "What We've Lost," they reveal a country-western vibe that compliments Kristina's vocal harmonies. "The Way Home" remains fluid and consistent until the end, which is where the live bonus tracks emerge illustrating how solid The Roccos are on stage (listen to "What Wonderful World" in particular). My only complaint is that there wasn't more music on the album, but it looks like there is another album by The Roccos I have yet to discover.
What is upsetting to me is that most people don't know who The Roccos are- the music industry has continued its downward spiral and this album's isolation from main stream exposure exemplifies this unfortunate trend that quality songwriters are fighting to transcend. Bravo to The Roccos for adding this emotionally rich work to a sea of apathy in today's music climate.
