By and large, Weezer's brand of childish powerpop left me bemused. It seemed as if Rivers Cuomo desperately wanted to be a Feely but was born too late. His obsessions with what may be called the nerdy side of teenage angst seemed almost prurient. And yet for all that, "Buddy Holly" is a catchy song. It is the sort of song that I can imagine a particular brand of American high school kid singing along to while they take their first tentative steps towards mass consumption of alcohol. It is, for me, Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrating their successes with a few beers. Every fibre of my being says that I should dislike this, and yet I cannot. And judging by its enduring popularity, I am apparently not the only one.
