The Shadows specialised in instrumental guitar-based music, except when they were the backing band for Cliff Richard. At the time, the possibilities that the guitar might become a more powerful instrument in the make up of a group were just about beginning to be explored. "Apache" is one of the most prominent examples of that exploration. A haunting, rumbling piece, it presaged the British invasion of the States of a few years later.
The Shadows are known to have inspired many prominent guitarists in the UK to first pick up a guitar. Even today, their influence is still felt, but as a band they faded from view by the time the Beatles arrived on the scene.
