In case you ever wondered why so many bluesmen were blind, well what the hell else were you supposed to do if you were a disabled black man in the deep south between the wars but play guitar. And could Blind Blake play! Blake incorporated elements of jazz and swing into his songs which gave them a distinctive feel. "Police Dog Blues" is perhaps his finest number. While Blake's voice was laid back and easy going, what his fingers were doing in the meantime was something entirely different. Syncopated melodies and complex patterns which bore a greater resemblance to the musical structure of a piano rather than a guitar. To this day, that finger picking style is all but impossible to duplicate. Just listen to the way he goes in between the verses. As for the B-Side, it was a standard for many years afterwards, covered by many and re-recorded by Blake himself more than once.
