Jarvis Cocker in the mid nineties with Pulp had established himself as a sort of spokesman almost for the average working class youth of the UK. His songs were full of the trivia of life from the perspective of someone who was neither rich, nor famous, nor beautiful nor intelligent. "Disco 2000" is a song of unrequited love set against the backdrop of the changing and evolving social situation of the nineties in the UK. If you can imagine the Kinks 30 years after their heyday then Ray Davies may well have been writing songs like this. The style is a pastiche of the kind of awful Italo-disco songs of the same era but the sentiments are entirely its own.
