Think of bluegrass music. Now think of some key artists. Next, take away all the male bluegrass artists and you should be left with one primary person; Hazel Dickens. Hazel has been laying both with Alice Gerrard as well as solo for many years, bringing a feminist point of view into bluegrass. They have been cruising folk festivals all over this great land of ours and gaining a small legion of fans. This album is arguably one of Hazel's best work and the tracks on it (although not all original) have been covered by many people proving her legendary status within the industry. She is able to incorporate all the usual bluegrass instruments (mandolins, banjos, fiddles) and superior musicianship (Jerry Douglas is all over it) to make it a fine overall Bluegrass record. Be sure and add this classic Apalachian bluegrass album in your collection. It's an essential addition.
